Bugaboo Beauties

Black Forest ridge is high and dry after the snow melts. On the lookout for flowers, I avoided the ridgetop, expecting them to be far downslope. I was looking for Indian paintbrush, asters or anemone in moist areas.

The sun had been on the towers for half an hour. From my camp, it was an hours slog up and over the ridge by headlamp. Finally, I was standing in the shadow of the ridge. A steady breeze was blowing and my fingers were freezing. Cameras & tripods have no mercy when it's cold.

I decided to head for the sun up on the ridge top more for the hike than to photograph. Cresting the ridge with fingers starting to thaw, these white Bugaboo beauties appeared.

The next half an hour just flew by... The clouds cooperated, sending mottled light flowing across the spires. I tried catching the gentle fleeting light on the flowers. These are some of the precious moments worth searching for in the wild.
